Countless children all over the world have little more than a crumpled water bottle to kick around. Meanwhile, in our own backyards and garages, old soccer balls and basketballs are going unused, wasting space and waiting to end up in a landfill. What if you could tidy your garage, thrill a child, and do something nice for the earth in one simple gesture? The Illinois Park & Recreation Association is pleased to announce its partnership with a spirited new not-for-profit effort. Rebound Sports Project collects used sports equipment and passes it along to children in need. Based in Mt. Prospect, Rebound regularly ships reusable inflatable sports balls to rural villages in Mexico, South America and, most recently, Africa. On Friday, September 12 from 9am-3pm, IPRA and Rebound will be partnering to collect balls at the IPRA Headquarters in Oakbrook Terrace. Simply bring your old soccer and basketballs to the back parking lot, where representatives from Rebound Sports and IPRA will be waiting. Please promote this collection at your park and recreation agency, at your day camps and youth sports leagues – encourage your patrons to donate! In the meantime, gather those old balls, and get ready to pass along a smile.

Natural Lawn Care for School Grounds and Turf Managers

Contact:
Ruth Kerzee

Growing consumer interest and public demand for organics are pushing the turf industry to transition chemically intensive lawns to more sustainable models. This excellent series of workshops – recognized by previous attendees as one of “the most professional” and “well organized” events on this topic – will show you how your business, school district or municipality can create naturally healthy, durable turf. Natural lawn care emphasizes building healthy soil, encouraging soil biology, selecting the right grass, watering and when applicable, mowing properly, maintaining turf correctly and managing pests naturally. Overtime, natural lawns can reduce the amount of fertilizer, pesticides, water and mowing. Far from “do-nothing” lawns, natural lawn care requires a specific process to ensure success. Whether you are a school grounds keeper, municipal turf manager or business looking for government contracts, this workshop will you the edge you need to succeed. Presented by Safer Pest Control Project and partly funded by the US EPA Great Lakes National Program Office. CEUs pending.
